I'm a long time fan of the track. I used to go twice weekly when I lived in Hialeah (1979-1985). My brother owned several claiming
horses, and a friend I played in a band with, worked as a trainer. The place was beautiful...it was a wonderful combination of nature
and excitement. I loved going for a few hours mid week, or an exciting Saturday.

I must have been about 5 years old. My father used to take me and my family to the racetrack as often as he could. He loved it. I was
young and I liked the horses and the flamingos but I wasn't always easy to entertain.
My father had placed his bet and he was holding his ticket. The race was on and I began to insist I wanted to go up to the second floor
to watch. He pleaded with me to please give him a moment, let the race finish, it was looking good for him.
I didn't want to wait, I wanted to go up to the second floor. "Pleeaaase papi porfavor" I begged. He couldn't say no. He took me by the
hand and we began our climb up the stairs. I was very happy.
Any one who has been there knows how windy it got. How easy it was for little whirl winds to form and twirl all the discarded tickets
and trash around. There was a gust of wind as we reached the second floor and my fathers ticket flew right out of his hand.
..you guess right I'm sure, as the race ended...he saw...it was a winning ticket.
He never found it, and I think it took all his strength to pretend like it was all fine. He never yelled, he never said anything bad to me.
He just grimmaced.
Now it's a favorite family joke and memory told to anyone who will listen. The memory was worth the loss. I loved that place.
Still...I never got to go back up to the second floor though.
